Bio: Marlyse Baptista is the 2024 President of the Linguistic Society of America and President’s Distinguished Professor of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania. A Fellow of the LSA and Honorary Member of ALMA-CV, she is widely recognized for her work on Creole languages and language contact. Her book The Syntax of Cape Verdean Creole was nominated for the Gustav O. Arlt Award in the Humanities. She has received numerous honors, including the University of Michigan’s Faculty Recognition Award, and major grants from the Mellon and Rockefeller Foundations, as well as the NSF. Her research and leadership have shaped the field of linguistics.
